Matomo

The Matomo connector brings your site's analytics data into the sheet from a Matomo instance (self-hosted or Matomo Cloud).

Different model from Google Analytics 4: Matomo doesn't let you freely combine dimensions and metrics. You pick a Site and then a predefined Report (e.g. "Country", "Search Engines", "Pages"): each report has a fixed set of metrics and at most one dimension, never a free choice. Some reports (e.g. the visits summary) have no dimension at all and return a single row per period.

Authentication works differently from other connectors: instead of an OAuth login, it uses your Matomo instance URL and an authentication token you generate yourself in Matomo (Personal Settings > Security > Auth Tokens). View access to the sites you want to use is enough. The instance must be reachable from the internet: this won't work with installations only available on a local network or behind a VPN.

To cross the report's data with a different dimension, use the Segment field (a filter applied to visits, computed by Matomo before the report is generated), separate from the row filters described below.

• view : Minimum level required for the Matomo token: view access on the sites you want to use is enough, no admin access needed. The connector only sees sites where the token has at least this permission.

Available metrics depend on the report you pick: there's no fixed list like other connectors. After selecting a Site and a Report, the sidebar only shows that report's own metrics, with the first three already checked.

Some metrics resolve to a different underlying field on periods longer than one day: unique visitors can't be summed across days, so over a multi-day range Matomo returns an approximate value (sum of each day's unique visitors) instead of an exact count. The connector handles this automatically, no action needed.

The Users metric only counts visits the site explicitly tagged with a user identifier (via Matomo's "User ID" feature, typically tied to a login): on sites that don't use it, it stays at zero even with plenty of visits - that's expected, not an error.

Dimensioni disponibili

At most one dimension per report, and it's always the one tied to the chosen report (e.g. the "Country" report always has the Country dimension and nothing else): it's never freely selectable. Some reports (summaries) have no dimension at all.

To analyze data by a dimension different from the report's own, use the Segment field in the report section (e.g. countryCode==it;deviceType==smartphone).

• One Matomo report has one Site and one Report at a time
  Unlike GA4, you cannot combine dimensions and metrics from different reports into a single Magic Reports report: each report here corresponds to one specific Matomo report, with its own metrics and single dimension.
• Sorting on a single column
  Matomo doesn't support multi-column sorting: you can sort by one metric or by the dimension at a time, not a combination of several columns.
• No "between" operator on metric filters
  The shared filter builder has no dedicated operator for a value range. You get the same result with two AND conditions: "greater than or equal to" the minimum value and "less than or equal to" the maximum.
• Row filters are case-insensitive
  Text comparisons in filters (contains, exact, begins with, etc.) don't distinguish uppercase from lowercase, whether Matomo applies them directly or the connector applies them.
• "Others" row and truncated data
  To save storage space, Matomo only keeps the first rows of each report (the threshold depends on the instance configuration) and sums the rest into an "Others" row: those rows can no longer be retrieved individually by any external tool, not just this connector.
• Data freshness and archiving
  Matomo pre-computes reports instead of always generating them on the fly. Today's data is partial and gets refreshed at intervals. If archiving is disabled on a self-hosted instance and no cron replaces it, some reports may come back empty or outdated: the connector returns whatever Matomo has already computed, it cannot force a recalculation.
• One connection per instance
  Each saved connection points to a single Matomo instance (one URL and one token). To work with several different instances, create a separate connection for each from the same connectors screen.

Filtri e ordinamento

• Row filters and Segment are not the same thing
  A filter acts on the rows of the already-computed report, without changing their values: e.g. in the Pages report, filtering for "URL contains /blog" only keeps those rows, each row's numbers stay the original ones. The Segment instead filters visits before the report is even computed, and the report is recalculated from scratch: in the Pages report, a "Country = Italy" segment shows pages viewed only by Italian visits, with different numbers. The segment is also the only way to cross the report with a dimension different from its own.
• Available operators on the dimension
  Contains, Begins with, Ends with, Exact, Regexp, each also available as Exclude (equivalent to "not contains", "not exact", etc.). All case-insensitive. For hierarchical reports (e.g. Pages) the comparison runs on the full path, not just the last level.
• Available operators on metrics
  Greater than, Less than, Greater than or equal to, Less than or equal to, Equal to, each also available as Exclude (e.g. Exclude + Equal to = not equal to). Percentages can be written either as "50" or as "50%"; durations are entered in seconds.

Tempi di esecuzione

The first run on a date range Matomo hasn't archived yet can be slower than usual: Matomo computes reports on request instead of already having them ready.

When a report has a metric filter, more than one dimension condition, or sorting on a calculated metric, Matomo returns every row for the period and the connector applies filtering/sorting itself: on reports with many rows this can take a few seconds longer than a filter-free report, which Matomo itself narrows down before sending it back.
