Common Errors
The most frequent error messages you may run into, what they mean and how to fix them.
These are the most frequent errors reported by Google Apps Script while running reports, with their real cause and how to fix them. Most of these are Google Apps Script platform limits (the platform Magic Reports runs on), not connector bugs: they can happen to anyone using this kind of add-on on Google Sheets.
| Message | Cause and fix |
|---|---|
| The document was not found or you don't have access | The Google Sheets file linked to the report was deleted, moved to trash, or the account running the report (manually or on a schedule) no longer has access to it: permissions changed, the file was shared only with a different account, or ownership was transferred. Check that the sheet still exists and that the account connected to Magic Reports actually has edit access. |
| Exceeded maximum execution time | Google Apps Script stops any execution after 6 minutes: a platform limit that cannot be changed. This happens with "Run reports" when there are too many reports in the same sheet or some take a long time. See the Best Practices page for how to organize reports to avoid this. |
| Out of memory error | The report (or the set of reports run in the same execution) is processing more data than Google Apps Script can hold in memory at once: very long periods, too many rows, or too many heavy reports together. Shorten the requested period or split heavier reports across separate Google Sheets files. |
| Unexpected JavaScript engine error (code DEADLINE_EXCEEDED or INTERNAL) | A generic, temporary error from Google Apps Script's servers, often tied to momentary overload during long or heavy executions. In most cases simply re-running the report is enough: if it keeps happening, apply the same fixes as execution time/memory errors (shorter periods, fewer reports together). |
| "You do not have access to this add-on. Please contact your organisation administrator" | This is not a Magic Reports issue: your organization's Google Workspace administrator has set restrictions that block installing or using add-ons they have not explicitly approved. Contact your IT administrator and ask them to authorize Magic Reports. |
| Exceeded the 10,000,000-cell limit in the sheet | This is a Google Sheets limit itself (not a Magic Reports one, and it cannot be changed): the whole file has reached the maximum number of cells allowed, counting every sheet inside it. Delete sheets or columns you no longer need in the file, or move some of your reports to a new, separate Google Sheets file. |
| Too many scripts running simultaneously for this Google account | Your Google account has reached the maximum number of Apps Script executions running at the same time, counting other installed add-ons too, not just Magic Reports. If you have several reports scheduled with "Schedule reports" all at the same time, try spreading them across different times of day. |
| Insufficient permissions on the requested Google Analytics property | The Google account behind the connection no longer has read access to that specific GA4 property: it was removed, permissions changed, or the property itself no longer exists. Check access to the property directly in Google Analytics with the account used for the connection, or recreate the connection with an account that has access. |
| Add-on authorization incomplete or revoked | Errors like "you do not have permission to call SpreadsheetApp.getActiveSpreadsheet/Ui.showSidebar/Ui.showModalDialog" mean the Magic Reports authorization flow was not completed fully, or was revoked afterwards (for example from Google Account > Security > Third-party apps, or a permissions reset by a Workspace administrator). Remove the add-on from Extensions > Add-ons > Manage add-ons and reinstall it, so the authorization request starts fresh. |
| Unexpected error opening the sidebar or editing an existing report ("Cannot read properties of null") | This happens when the "Magic Reports Configuration" sheet has been renamed or deleted: Magic Reports looks it up by its exact name to read/write reports, and if it can no longer find it the operation fails with this error. Do not rename or delete the "Magic Reports Configuration" sheet: if you already did by mistake, rename it back exactly as it was. |
| A server error occurred, please try again later | A temporary error on Google's infrastructure side (not specific to Magic Reports). In the vast majority of cases, simply trying again after a few minutes resolves it. |
