Best Practices
Practical tips for using Magic Reports without surprises.
Do not pile up too many reports in the same sheet
"Run reports" runs every report in the sheet one after another, in the same execution. Google Apps Script stops any execution after 6 minutes, a platform limit that has nothing to do with Magic Reports and cannot be raised: if there are too many reports to run (or some take a long time, e.g. very long periods or connectors that download a lot of data), the run can stop partway through and the remaining reports simply do not run that time. You will not get an error for reports skipped this way: you can tell by checking the "Report status" column (reports that did not run keep the status of their last successful run).
If you need to manage many reports, some practical options: split them across several separate Google Sheets files (each with its own schedule), or schedule them at different times of day with "Schedule reports" instead of running them all together.
Report names must be unique
If two reports in the same sheet share the same name, only one of them runs: the other is skipped with no visible error. Check the "Report name" column if a report unexpectedly stops updating.
The two "Other options" checkboxes in the form
In the sidebar, under "Other Settings", you will find two checkboxes shared by (almost) every connector:
- Convert numeric-looking values to numbers: converts values that look like numbers (e.g. the string "42") into real numbers, so you can use them in Google Sheets formulas, charts and sorting instead of as text.
- Append new results to old: instead of clearing and rewriting the report sheet on every run, it adds the new rows below the ones already there. Useful for building a history over time (e.g. one snapshot per day), but note that the report totals are not shown while this option is on (see the configuration sheet fields page).
Some fields are only set by typing directly into the cell
Not every field in the configuration sheet has a matching sidebar control: Compare start date, Compare end date, Offset, Limit, Skip report, Show Quotas, Hide report header, Send to e-mail and Currency code (where it applies) are set by typing directly into that column's cell, you will not find them in any form. Details for each are on the Configuration Sheet Fields page.
Do not edit the "Data Source" cell by hand
That cell links the column to the right connector and connection. Editing or clearing it breaks the report: to change connector or connection, recreate the report from the sidebar instead of editing that cell.
